Time management

Start   Mid-term   End

Time.

Time is precious.

Time is expensive.

Time is limited.

And the only thing we know for sure,

is that time will go on and on, always.

Having said that, time management is of utmost important to students and future managers. If you are able to manage your time well, you will avoid getting a burn-out, but also you make sure that all your tasks are finished on time and that you keep the overview.

In module 1, time management was the subject. The first semester was quite a chaos, as we were buried in group projects and assignments.

I must admit that there was a lot of planning (and a lot of not following up on the planning).

One really big disappointment was the fact that I had to deal with non-cooperating team members for a few times. This is really time-consuming and it kills your morale. A side-effect of these non-cooperating team members was that I had to re-adjust my planning over and over again.

In the Excel-file on the left, you will find my task breakdown list and my priority grid of 10/11/2016.

Time wasters were apparent as well this semester. First of all, being connected everywhere at all times is wonderful and quite useful as well. However, it does have the power to distract you from the things you would have to do. Netflix is also one of these bad boys. Some people might say that cycling would be a time waster for me as well, but I find inspiration and joy in doing this sport, which is why I do not list it as a time waster.

Looking back on the first half of the semester, there are some things which I would rather see differently. From my side, as well as from my colleagues side. I have experienced free-ridership a few times and it is a terrible experience, I can tell you. Therefore, for the next group assignment, I will take the lead of the team and assign a part of the task to every team member. This means that I have to do extra work before every assignment, but it is worth the elimination of the risk of failing an assignment. I always have the tendency to take the lead in an assignment, as I feel more comfortable having the control over a group project.

This new approach will make sure that I am not going to let free-riders ruin my assignment, or take off with marks they did not even work for. Apart from assigning the tasks, I will also set a deadline to hand in the task. If someone crosses the deadline, they will be kicked out of the group.

Also, I will start each Monday with checking and adjusting my planning for the coming two weeks. I will check up on deadlines and progress and see how far I have progressed. This is doable, because I can do it when I get home after People Management. It will help me staying on track and not losing sight on the high number of assignments. I think it will take me about half an hour every Monday.

On the left you will find my tasks. The first pdf-file is from the start, followed by the tasks of mid-term and of the end of the term.

Below the tasks, you will find my calendar
