Internship Preparation (Assignment 5)

Part 1: Reflection of internship opportunity

The internship description given by Nathanael Horny at Hype Energy Drinks in Spain (Horny) is much appealing to me. He has a very broad range of tasks and lots of responsibility.

For me, this would be a great internship opportunity. First of all, I really like the consumer goods market, of which Hype Energy Drinks is part. I am not a super big fan of energy drinks, but I have no problems with this slight downside.

Nathanael had someone he could look up to and who would give him the freedom to do his thing. As I am a noted achiever myself, this would be perfect. I like to be able to look up to someone and get direct feedback from this person. The fact that the higher placed persons, like the CFO expressed his gratitude and even asked him to do a very important research, gives me the impression that Nathanael got lots of responsibilities. I would also really like to get some responsibilities, as I want to learn how to perform in a company. An internship is a perfect place to develop yourself, without the sometimes very high pressure of a real job.

I am an intuitive thinker, which means that I want to come up with solutions instead of problems. However, this does mean that I can sometimes be a bit stuck in my own view. I have to make sure to keep listening to other people. Nathanael had the opportunity to do this as well, because he was able to come up with a solution to the research about the colours, within a team. Again, this is a lot of responsibility for an intern, but I think that if you prove that you are up to something that you can steadily secure a job after your internship.

As a script writer, I like to map out everything and think of the long-term consequences as well as the short-term consequences. This does mean that sometimes I am ahead of other people with my thinking and that is why I need to brief other people. In Hype Energy Drinks, they organised regular meetings, to make sure everyone was up to speed. The flaw of my talent and lever skill to develop would have been covered by this.

Overall, I think this internship opportunity is a good one for me. My talents can be optimised, while my lever skills are also taken care of by the company. This is crucial in order to succeed in my professional life.

Part 2: Motivation for top internship of your choice

My favourite area of work would be the bicycling industry. I am a highly active cyclist myself, and I would love to contribute to spreading the ‘love’. I would love to work at TREK (TREK bikes, sd), because they distinguish themselves from other brands, providing a very high quality level for a competitive price. They have several internships available throughout the year, but account management would be my favourite. In order to reach this, I have enrolled myself for a mail service for when new internship opportunities present themselves, so I can be one of the first to enrol.

As I am an active cyclist myself, I am confident that I would be a valuable asset to your company, because I have a deeper understanding of the needs of a cyclist and where added value can be offered by cycling-specific companies. I believe that hard work pays off, which is why I started working at the age of 12 during multiple hours a week and in the weekends, parallel to my school work. Working hard to get the gains is also reflected in my cycling training schemes, as the only way to get better is to train more.

If I look at the cycling, this brings me to another asset I have developed by this. I am confident in making extensive planning schemes, with room for change of course, which taught me to manage my time in the most efficient and effective way. For these planning schemes, I set goals for myself and plan the route to this goal, with intermediary sub-goals. Goal setting has become second nature to me in this way. Pursuing these goals has even become one of my favourite activities.

In the past I have worked in multiple industries, which gives me a broad vision on ways to handle CRM for example. At Bakery Bart’s, where I had to take over all the responsibilities of the owner due to a major injury, I had to organise the entire business operations from ordering base products to sales and customer relations. Unfortunately, the owner had to stop the business because of his injury, otherwise I would have worked there until my studies were finished. After this, I worked in clothing retail (Shoeby), but this was not really my thing. I have learned a lot about sales and customer relations however, and I managed to reach the sales target every time I worked. In about 60% of the times I even sold more than the target.

In Artevelde University College, where I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree at the moment, I got a solid base in intercultural communication, HR, finance and Spanish. I can speak Dutch and English fluently, while German, French and Spanish are at B2 level at this point in time. My first semester of my final year, I will spend abroad in Spain, to improve my level of Spanish, as well as developing myself as a person.

To conclude, I believe that I would be a valuable asset to TREK and I am confident that I can help to expend the business.
