Sustainability Project
The refugee crisis is one of the most recent and largest problems that the European Union is facing right now. After the financial crisis this is probably the most urgent issue that needs to be resolved. There are a lot of different interests involved, which probably makes it even more difficult to solve.
For the sustainability project we chose to pick the social sustainability side. In stead of choosing an economical or environmental sustainability project we opted for the social sustainability. We think that it is very important to help the people who need it most. Therefore we decided to create a teaching programme. We have put a lot of work in discovering how we would take on the project. In the next paragraph I will take you through our ideas.
First of all we wanted to create a cooperation between students and refugees. Students would get study points (like the tutoring programme on UGent) in exchange for teaching the refugees. However, this would cost way too much time, which is why we chose for a short-term project as well. The short-term project would be a part of the lessons for the communication and internationally oriented bachelors. Students would be able to do it as part of their assessment. They would be giving a kind of 'first-aid-kit' for the refugees so that they can survive at least until they get their 'inburgeringscursus'. The long-term project would involve study points to be given to students, but as we would have to get this through the government, it would take a lot of time.
In the presentation we have explained everything in detail, but I do not have the time and space here to elaborate too much on the details. I would like to talk a bit about how the meetings went. The dynamics in the group were not very good, as there was no working mentality. I, as chair man, really had to coordinate and push everyone to start working on the tasks. As you can see in the minutes, not everyone was present during the meetings. This is something which I really disliked, as I have explained as chair man during one of the learning groups as well. Nevertheless I think we have delivered a good end product, which is essentially the most important.
